A Tennessee Call to End False Choices

A Tennessee Call to End False Choices

Amplifying a recent speech by Metro Nashville Public Schools Director Jesse Register, Chris Barbic makes a compelling call in today’s Tennessean for a more civil conversation about improving public schools in Tennessee.

Instead of forcing an all-or-nothing position on charters, Barbic calls for communities to come together around the best options for our students. Barbic, who runs Tennessee’s statewide turnaround-schools effort, writes:

Lately, education efforts have unfortunately turned into a running series of false choices and debates. You’re pro-charter or anti-charter. You’re pro-union or anti-union. Let’s be pro-quality schools and anti-anything that gets in the way of our kids’ success.

Here’s hoping that the education leadership in Tennessee inspires a movement away from digging in and toward reaching out.
