Metacognition in the Third Grade? You Bet

“At first I thought my third graders would not really get it. But then I realized I was underestimating my kids, so I went back and taught them what metacognition is and it became the focus of everything we did for our reader’s workshop.”

You and I may not know what metacognition is, but Melody Arabo’s third graders do!

I started thinking out loud all the time, and they started to understand that the little voice inside your head is the most important thing when you’re reading. They just love that part of reading now, and they feel so sophisticated.

Teachers like Ms. Arabo are pushing the boundaries of what is possible to teach students under the Common Core State Standards.

The America Achieves Fellowship is committed to helping great teachers and principals share what’s happening in their schools with parents and the public. If you ever want to talk to a teacher to learn how education policies play out in the classroom, let me know at [email protected]. We’d love to help!

Charlie is the Program Director for State Fellowships at America Achieves, where he has led the creation of teacher leadership programs in Colorado, Michigan and New York.
