More Support for “a Civil Conversation” and Building Bridges

Ed Week’s Mark Walsh takes a look at Education Post in his most recent blog, New Group Seeks to Counter “Toxic Nature” of Education-Policy Debate.

Sheppard Ranbom of CommunicationsWorks shares some important wisdom for our nascent effort:

To be successful, this effort needs to show inclusiveness and truly bridge divides, and not just carry the views of any particular group of funders.

We believe part of bridging those divides depends on authentic communication — a core value for us, but not always easy to maintain in such a polarized debate. However, the original edu-wonk, Andrew Rotherham, gives us a bit of credit on this coming out of the gate:

“What’s refreshing is that there is some transparency here” with Education Post and its goals and funders, he said. “I don’t understand when having [policy] goals became incompatible with having a civil conversation. There is no one in this entire debate [about improving schools] that doesn’t have views.”
