My School Showed Me My Passion and Now I’m a Filmmaker

In Georgia, 84,000 students attended charter schools in the 2016-17 school year. My story is just one of thousands of success stories of students who have been able to pursue their dreams thanks to the high-quality education they received at a public charter school.

I graduated from North Springs Charter High School in Atlanta, which has a visual and performing arts academy. The charter part is important because I was able to travel across town, out of district, to attend a school that offered courses I was passionate in that prepared me for the career I’m in today.

As a filmmaker, the storytelling and technical skills I learned became important building blocks moving forward.

All of this was made possible by being able to choose the best educational route for my unique needs. This opportunity was not available in my neighborhood school.

Public charter schools often specialize in a focus area, such as STEM, performing arts or bilingual instruction. Because charter schools offer a range of options for students and families to choose from, they can find the school that best fits their needs and interests.

My life is a showcase for the academic successes of charter schools and their students. School choice is extremely important for me because I gained exposure and specialization in a career that I’m passionate about and that I continue to work in.

I hope that more students will have the same options and opportunities in the future and that they learn to thrive no matter what educational path they choose.
