One Teacher on Her “Ideal” School System

Caroline Apgar is a middle school language-arts teacher at Mauro-Sheridan Science, Technology, and Communications Interdistrict Magnet School in New Haven, Connecticut. In an interview for Educators 4 Excellence she shared stories from her classroom, her journey as a teacher and what she believes a good education system looks like.

She supports curriculum that encourages students to be critical thinkers and also allows teachers to make decisions on which instructional strategies are right for their students.

An ideal school system is one that empowers teachers to make instructional decisions based on the needs of their students. It would look at the whole child, not just their individual data—it’s more than just assessing kids and labeling them with a score. It would provide authentic learning experiences, from projects to real world field trips. It’s through that diversity of strategy, skill, and application that we will really push our kids to become global, critical thinkers for the next century.
