Despite yesterday’s Vergara ruling, the fight continues to raise the bar for teacher tenure and make performance a factor in staffing laws and policies. Teachers themselves have emphatically said that they want stronger performance factors in tenure and staffing decisions, and students and families deserve policies that prioritize quality over a quality-blind seniority formula.
The fight for student-focused reforms continues in New York, Minnesota, and California, and it will continue at the policy and legislative levels as well.
We can maintain protections for teachers, while also strengthening protections for all students and working to ensure they have access to a quality education.
